Ron Lai is chef with a passion for experimenting with dishes to create new and excited flavours suitable for everyone’s tastebuds.
Dinkum Oriental began its journey in the Port City of Fremantle, Western Australia as Lai’s food. As owner and chef of Lai Lai Restaurant in Fremantle, Ron took inspiration from years of creativity and feedback from the customers. He developed a variety of authentic Asian dishes that were loved by his local as well as more traditional Asian customers.
These carefully developed dishes, whilst created with the Australian palate in mind, also kept true to their Asian flavour origins. It is from this period that he derived his motto “It is the sauce that wins your heart”.
Armed with the knowing tastebuds of his customers, family and friends, Ron began to supply his sauces to other restaurants who in turn also enjoyed great responses from their customers.
As the business grew and Ron decided to repackage the sauces to reflect the history and “life” that the sauces had taken, a name was required. Through discussions with his family two key aspects that make the sauce what it is kept reappearing, the Asian and Australian qualities. It was this great combination that created such wonderful flavours and he wanted a name to reflect that.
How to describe this wonderful merging though? Luckily there was already a word that existed that encapsulated the heart of the new product, Dinkum.
The word “dinkum” was reputedly coined on the Australian goldfields. It comes from one of the Chinese dialects widely spoken at the diggings: “din” and “kum” loosely translating as “true gold”.
Dinkum Oriental was born.
Today, you can buy the Dinkum Oriental sauces from selected supermarket and oriental supermarket shelves and wholesale distributors all over Western Australia and Australia.
In addition to our regular sauces, we also do custom sauces/recipes and manufacture for commercial clients.
