We are excited to introduce the new Urban Locavore mascot and spokes-bird, Brutus the Western Ground Parrot!
The Western Ground Parrot is unique to Western Australia and one of the rarest birds in the world – there are less than 110 remaining making them critically endangered. Brutus takes his name from a one of the birds living in captivity (see a photo of the real Brutus below). Although there is a small number of Western Ground Parrots in captivity, there is currently no captive breeding program. The Friends of the Western Ground Parrot are in the planning stages to launch a campaign to raise the significant funds required to commence a captive breeding program.
Urban Locavore has joined with the Friends of the Western Ground Parrot Inc to help raise awareness of this very special bird and hopefully save it from extinction. Please take a moment to read the Friends of the Western Ground Parrot Inc website, consider becoming a member, making a donation online or volunteering for a Western Ground Parrot project.
